Overview
Located in the Rio Grande National Forest the Colorado Bedrock Gold 001 Unpatented Placer Claim is 20.00 acres of easily accesible yet remote mining claim. Located directly down source of the in-situ lode deposits that were developed in the 19040's. the stream has a high concentration of quality gold including nuggets and large flakes in addition to fine gold. Perfect for a small dredging or high banking operation.
Competition
The area is extremely competitive for claims and Gunnison Gold Prospecting currently holds the only two placer claims for sale in the entire Quartz Creek valley.
Camping
Camping is allowed on the claim for up to 14 days continuous per month and the camping area is located directly creekside in the center of the claim.
Access
Access is by Forest Service RD 765 and is 2WD passable. From the claim you have easy access to the town of Pitkin, Cumberland Pass, and the Town of Tincup.
With no thru access the claim has minimal traffic and has largely been sheltered for years by the high elevation, short mining season, and lack of continuous loop road infrastructure.
History
The Ford Creek/Bonita Hill area was primarily developed for its lode gold and silver sources. With no evidence of large scale placer mining on the claim it's safe to assume that the creek has never been worked on a large scale and probably only intermittently with hand fed sluice box and gold pans. The lode mines are extensive with numerous adits, shafts, and trenches dug and developed upstream and on all side of this placer claim.
The lode mines were so rich that a small prospectors tent/cabin boom town sprung up close to this placer claim called Spook Hollow, old remnants of the town are still visible to this day.
Dredging
Geology
The alluvial gold located on the claim did not have far to travel, leaving extra large and coarse pieces of gold. The gold disseminated into the creek bed and banks by eroding from nearby lode vein that were primarily quartz based vein structures with mineralization of free mill gold, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, lead, silver, and copper.
The claim covers the confluence of Ford Creek and an unnamed tirubarty that flows thru the old ghost town settlement of Spook Hollow. These headwaters fingers then branch together on the claim forming the greater Ford Creek. The creek is capable of floating a dredge and bedrock ranges anywhere from 2 feet to 15 feet on the claim based upon current drill results. Spring time run-off is signifcant with the creek often overflowing its banks. The creek does run year round and is lowest in October.
High bench deposits are located on the claim with a range of bench deposit overburden depths between 6 feet to 11 feet in total depth.
