Overview

Located in the Rio Grande National Forest the Klondike Hollow Project 005 Unpatented Lode Claim is 20.66 acres of easily accessible yet remote mining claim.  Located directly on a prominent geologic structure that features a mine shaft, cabin, high grade ore, and numerous surface dozer trench cuts and prospect pit.

The main features of this mining claim are three large dozer trench cuts with a total length of 407'.  Additionally, there are numerous small prospect pits and large piles of dirt/ore from the dozer trench cuts.

The main workings on this site actually sit directly below the remains of the old cabin frame in the form of a shaft.  Hand stacked high grade ore was located inside the cabin.  It appears the cabin may have been some type of hoist house/cabin that served a variety of purposes to the miners.  The cabin log joints are all hand cut with an axe, showing the time in which these mines were actively worked.

Camping

Camping is allowed on the claim for up to 14 days continuous per month and the camping area is located directly adjacent to the main workings.

Access

10.5 miles from the town of Saguache.  Standard clearance 2WD pickup truck/suv is able to successfully access the claim

With no thru access the claim has minimal traffic and has largely been sheltered for years by the high elevation, short mining season, and lack of continuous loop road infrastructure.

History

The Ford Creek/Bonita Hill area was primarily developed for its lode gold and silver sources.  With production ending prematurely in the early 1940's and never re-opening.

The lode mines were so rich that a small prospectors tent/cabin boom town sprung up close to this placer claim called Spook Hollow, old remnants of the town are still visible to this day.

Geology

Local alteration of early barren stage of alteration by fumarolic or acid hot spring activity resulted in intense silification, wall rock replacement by jasper and alteration products of hematite, diaspore, alunite, barite, zunyite, rutile, and kaolin minerals.  Later mineralization stage by alkaline or neutral solutions deposited ore and gangue and caused micaceous alteration (sericite and chlorite) and calcite, quartz, and pyrite.
