Overview

Located in the Monarch Mining District between the top of Monarch pass and Salida the Willow Ridge Gold Claim is a 20.66 Acre Unpatented Federal Lode Mining Claim.

Originally abandoned in the 1940's this claim has not been brought back into production since closing due to the war act of WW2.  High elevations and short mining seasons has been a deterrent to re-opening this mine since its premature closure.

This mine dominates the claim with a large open cut sunk directly on a Quartz Reef with four different adits driven on other mineral enriched zones.  An abandoned miners cabin sits on the claim directly adjacent to the main portal and an old card believed to be from the 40's or 50's sits onsite as well.  Old mining relics can be found in the general vicinity of the main miners cabin.

The adits have largely been air slacked on the surface due to time, weathering, and erosion.  While it is still believed the underground workings are intact and relatively passable, the adit entrances will need to be re-opened and stabilized to permit safe entrance and egress.  Having air slacked adits is a common occurrence in this part of Colorado.  Long times of abandonment and heavy snowfalls accompanied by intense spring run offs are largely the driving factors that wreak havoc on mine openings.

Adits can either be opened by hand or by mini excavator. Typically, this would potentially require a Notice of Intent Permit (NOI).

Numerous prospect holes are found within the claim boundaries as well as a small shaft and dozer cuts.  It's very apparent once onsite that the previous miners were looking for the highest grade ore (called high grading) due to the amount of prospecting with smaller dozer cuts and prospects.

The large open cut pit shows surface expression of quality mineralization and strong geologic structure.  Grab samples can easily be found containing easily recognizable indicator minerals such as copper, lead, galena, iron, and malachite.

The mine produced primarily silver as the main commodity mined that came in the form of native silver, but primarily galena (lead/silver).  Other metals that were a byproduct of silver mining were gold, copper, iron, lead, and zinc.

The greater area around the claim had 4-5 historic past producing mines that were of silver/gold origin.  Quartz reefs dominate this claim with widths ranging from a few inches wide to up to 8 feet along the surface exposure of the vein trend.  The vein structures strike primarily Northwest and are steeply dipping.

The sample identification name for the Willow Ridge Gold is WRG

The Willow Ridge Gold claim is an ideal claim for a smaller mining venture.  It would be worthwhile to high grade the leftover dumps, re-open the adits, and ideally complete a quality exploration drilling program to further define and delineate the mineral resources onsite.
