Overview
Located 3 miles from the town of Pitkin Colorado, the Quartz Creek Gold 017 Unpatented Placer Mining Claim covers 20.00 acres with 1,400 linear feet of stream running thru the claim.
Water flow is consistent throughout the summer and a 2WD dirt road running thru the claim making for easy access.
Quartz Creek is known for somewhat pocket style gold deposits and dry bench gold deposition.
Gold, silver, and lead are the primary metals found on the claim in fine to flake size.
In and around the flowing creek gold can be found in micron form below the top layer of decomposing organics. Once 2-4 feet from the surface a clay layer is found that acts as a false bedrock and is usually a red to blue hued clay in color complexion. This layer is where most small scale prospectors stop digging deeper and begin following this false bedrock layer upstream.
Large boulders and flow sand from large volumes of spring runoff are also located on this claim. It has been found that the flow sand is unpredictable for consistent gold values.
Camping
There is no great camping spot on this claim. Dispersed camping spots are located either downstream approximately 1 mile or upstream approximately 1 mile. There is a paid Quartz Creek campground located 1.5 miles upstream from the claim and a second paid campground located 1 mile downstream. The town of Pitkin also has Airbnb and other direct cabin rentals if you plan in advance.
Access
Located just 1.47 miles from the town of Pitkin the claim has standard Forest Service dirt road access on the North side of the claim via Cumberland Pass Road. This road is 2WD passable to the claim and begins to turn into a 4WD road the further past the claim you travel.
There is a 50" width restriction trail called the Middle Quartz Trail on the South side of the claim that is legal for ATV's and dirt bikes under the 50" width restriction giving you two options of access to this claim
Optimum Recovery
During the course of testing this claim we have found that traditional miners moss with expanded metal and hungarian style riffles do catch a higher rate of micron style gold vs pre-molded matting setups.
For clean up of concentrates at home it's also been noted that an RP4 style shaker table with a settling agent provides the best final outcome for cleaning on concentrates, especially the ultra fine micron gold.
Mining Permits
Any surface disturbance greater than casual / recreational usage will likely require a mining permit & plan in place before beginning operations. Contact us for mining permit consultant recommendations should you desire to go beyond metal detecting, gravity river sluicing, gold panning, etc. High Banking, Dredging, or any other similar activity will absolutely require a permit before operations can begin.
Seasonality
Due to the high elevation nature of this mining district (9,600') the general season dates are May 15th thru October 15th of each year. Occasionally, claim owners can work into the end of October to the beginning of November if the cold can be tolerated. Outside of the above listed mining season the claim is inaccessible due to the sheer amount of snow volume this area receives over the winter months.
The yearly maintenance fee is paid up till 09/01/2027.
